Mailing List Contact[edit]
Why not direct people to http://mail.wikipedia.org/mailman/listinfo/commons-l - the commons mailing list? It's public, but could be used for copyvio enquiries etc. Since it's barely getting used at the moment, at least a message on it would get people's attention. pfctdayelise (translate?) 13:29, 14 February 2006 (UTC)
Also, maybe we should model this page on w:Wikipedia:Contact us, which I look at today for the first time. I find it refreshingly straight forward! pfctdayelise (translate?) 13:30, 14 February 2006 (UTC)
Maybe permissions@wikimedia.org should get mentioned here, too? regards, High on a tree 05:43, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
I ask to help with popularization Wikipedia[edit]
Good afternoon! I am the user Russian Wikipedia. I do not know German, therefore this text I write in Russian and later I shall take advantage of machine translation. At present we try to open new language section - Sakha (Yakut), Requests_for_new_languages/Wikipedia_Sakha. Has faced a problem of fear of Internet users before editing and a writing of clauses. Because of it many people recede. Has looked your fine roller with the African elephant how to bring editing in clause. The similar roller in native or well familiar language could help to solve this problem. Knowing, that wikipedians are always ready to help each other, has decided to ask you to make a similar roller in Russian. Undertake this business, please. Yours faithfully, Nikolay Pavlov, Yakutsk, mailto:halan@yandex.ru --87.226.163.54 22:03, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
- I have by mistake placed here the reference to the German user - to the author of video of a lesson, but I shall be all the same glad if will read through it)))) --87.226.163.54 22:14, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
Small typos[edit]
{{editprotected}}
Would an admin please replace all instances of "Wikipedians" in the article with "Wikimedians"? I think that I have listed them all below.
- "Usually, you’ll find capable Wikipedians around, who’ll answer your questions."
- "An experienced team of Wikipedians does read and answer to your message there—however, the probability for a quick answer is somewhat lower."
Thanks! Greeves 02:58, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
Advice not to send e-mail about using images[edit]
The page advices not to send e-mail when wanting to use an image. I understand that unrelated users do not want to read and answer such e-mail, but isn't the uploader normally interrested in hearing about usage of the files? I think that should be mentioned. Many users are also ready to license their files in other ways than those stated on the file description (either for money or to make the file usable in some oddly licensed project). --LPfi (talk) 10:43, 2 March 2011 (UTC)
Big clusters of camera positions in google maps[edit]
If there are to many pictures positioned very close together, not all are shown in toolserver.
Is there an solution for this?

Deletions of images without purpose[edit]
Dear Wikimedia administrators, your member User:1Veertje seems to delete images without purpose and against your own policies. For example she deleted 3 of my photographs of my own artworks with the reason "copyright violation" - ridiculous! I wrote on her discussion page, but she doesn't answer. I asked for deletion-undo - nothing happens. Please watch what User:1Veertje is doing. As long as such behaviour rules at Wikimedia Commons, I certainly won't donate a single dollar. --Myriam Thyes 23:59, 26 February 2013 (UTC)
Translation[edit]
Mono marked this page for translation and overwrote all previous translations; apparently he doesn't want to recover them so he now removed it from translation and will hopefully restore translations.[1] This page would be much easier to translate if it didn't use subpages, does it really need to? If it really does:
- the base page and all subpages, plus the navigation template, have to be marked for translation, with each bullet being a translation unit;
- all links to subpages and other pages must use Special:MyLanguage format but be localisable so that translators can point them elsewhere;
- the new content is hopefully clearly corresponding to the old one, so the translation admin will immediately copy old translations to the new position each bullet/section has in the subpages system;
- translators will adjust links to contact pages and email address as fit for their language (e.g. language subqueues on OTRS if existing, non-English village pumps, chapters press contacts), including the sidebar (e.g. point the "donate" directly to foundationwiki without a local page), or just don't translate pages which can't be translated if any.
--Nemo 07:39, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
- On a related note, please unfix this "fix", in which Mono fixed away the links to all the existing translations right before fully protecting the page without discussion or explanation. —LX (talk, contribs) 13:09, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
Consent Issues[edit]
Link goes to a discussion where a change was made to Commons guidelines regarding COM:IDENT. In this case a change was made at the suggestion of a WMF member to add a link to this page when someone needs to discuss the removal of an image discretely. However it is not obvious on this page if it is indeed suitable for COM:IDENT issues. Recommend we add an additional header for Media with issues of consent. Saffron Blaze (talk) 22:22, 18 November 2013 (UTC)
- I suggest to change the title "Copyright violations" to "Copyright violations or inappropriate images" and change the sentence "In order to get quick help with copyright violations or similar issues, you can send an email to a team of volunteer helpers of the project: info-en-c@wikimedia.org. Please state:" to "In order to get quick help with copyright violations or similar issues like you find an inappropriate image of you as the subject, you can send an email to a team of volunteer helpers of the project: info-en-c@wikimedia.org. Please state:". The page is currently protected, and can be edited only by administrators. JKadavoor Jee 02:50, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
- The use of the word "inappropriate" would casue trouble I bet. Perhaps retitle the whole thing to 'problem images' then give a sub heading for 'copyvio', 'children', consent' and any others that seem appropriate. 131.137.245.207 20:13, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
- See; the attempt is to provide a window to receive complaints. Currently people either contact any email address found here; or refrain disappointingly without seeing any option, as most subjects are non-Wikimedians who don't know what is a deletion request. Moreover, such DRs have always a Streisand effect; so discrete handling is always better. . The "inappropriateness" may have legal grounds, like privacy violations, lack of consent (not required in all cases), etc. Sometimes, the subject may willing to provide a better picture to substitute for a courtesy deletion. Sometimes blurring the picture to make it unidentifiable may enough. All such things can be handled through mails, probably by the OTRS or a similar team. We can't guarantee a deletion; but offer a way to communicate. JKadavoor Jee 05:41, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
- I think this suggestion is more meaningful considering the new amended resolution: "Treating any person who has a complaint about how they are portrayed in our projects with patience, kindness, and respect, and encouraging others to do the same." JKadavoor Jee 07:05, 9 December 2013 (UTC)
- I also think that problem images is a better term, neutral and broad. Certainly there must be an official possibility to report complains about images hosted on Commons. Just hope we won't receive too many and get stuck in solving all of them. Seleucidis (talk) 09:10, 13 December 2013 (UTC)
Suggested change[edit]
Currently, the page reads:
== Report abuse ==
=== Copyright violations ===
- In order to get quick help with copyright violations or similar issues, you can send an email to a team of volunteer helpers of the project: info-en-c@wikimedia.org. Please state:
- The precise reason of your inquiry.
- The page(s) or image(s) of concern.
- Please note that this is an informal but direct and discreet contact with respect to legal matters provided by volunteers, for official contact see Commons:General disclaimer.
- If you prefer to use the process of a formal DMCA/OCILLA request, you can send it to the Wikimedia Foundation's designated agent.
===Inappropriate images of children===
- To report inappropriate images of children, email the Wikimedia Foundation at legal-reportswikimedia.org, being sure to include a link to the content. We do not encourage community members to download or archive potentially inappropriate content.

- Comment It might be worth pointing out that info-en-c@wm.org is an English Wikipedia queue, as far as I am aware. odder (talk) 17:24, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
- Comment User:Sj, do you mean "without your consent in a private setting" or are you proposing courtesy deletion of any photo, including those taken at public events? John Vandenberg (chat) 17:35, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
- If either the subject or the creator of an image has a problem with it being hosted here, they need a simple quick way to get a response. The context of the image may affect the response they receive, but it doesn't affect their need for one. This section should cover both photos taken without consent in a private setting, which are usually deleted per COM:IDENT, and courtesy deletions. The requestor likely won't know enough law to distinguish between the two cases, so that detail is unhelpful on this page. --SJ+ 18:51, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks Sj. Then I suggest mentioning COM:IDENT & Commons:Courtesy deletions, and indicate that the latter is not policy yet. John Vandenberg (chat) 19:14, 14 December 2013 (UTC)

- Concur with the suggestion. I would add that there are many situations where consent may be required, or should be required, even in a public setting. Saffron Blaze (talk) 19:30, 15 December 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you for this feedback. @odder this was the otrs queue already noted on the page. I'm not planning to address the point you raise (is there no Commons-specific queue?) but if someone else has better otrs information, please update the page with it. I made the other changes suggested above. If there is no further comment after another week or so I will update the page. --SJ+ 00:15, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
- The changes are an improvement, but they still seem to raise false expectations about images taken in public places. While subject consent may sometimes be needed there, often it isn't, and the image could be kept. I think we should either spell this out a bit more carefully, or just rely on the links and remove the part saying "if you originally gave consent for them to be published online". --Avenue (talk) 01:10, 22 December 2013 (UTC)

The above seems to be uncontroversial. This page is alas protected. Can an admin please review & apply these changes? --SJ+ 01:21, 26 December 2013 (UTC)
- Done. Page is protected because people tend to try and contact us by editing the page and that breaks stuff for other people. In the future asking an admin (like you did) works & {{Editrequest}} also does. Cheers, —Mono 01:57, 26 December 2013 (UTC)
Please consider this alternative text, as I think it adds a bit more clarity and hopefully engages them to use the normal process for most cases:
Images of yourself[edit]
If you find an image or video of yourself published here and want it removed you may request it be deleted. It is recommended you read our deletion policy before making a request. In general you may request a deletion if:
- The media was published without your consent. The policy at COM:IDENT details this issue. If you believe this policy has not been respected you can raise a deletion request.
- If you would like the media to be removed for other non-policy based reasons it may be removed as a courtesy.
- Removal of media is not guaranteed. While media taken in a private place that fail to honor the subject's right of privacy are removed, other requests for removal do not yet have a uniform policy and are reviewed case-by-case.
- For deletions where you require more discretion than would be provided through a normal deletion request, you may contact our trusted volunteer team for help: info-commons@wikimedia.org.

Please add Commons general inquiry address[edit]
Hi - There is an address, info-commons@wikimedia.org. This should be used for anything Commons related, except for permissions, of course. I'd suggest add thing the following line immediately after the bullet that states "For normal feedback—such as inquiries about depicted contents, criticism or suggestions—every page and file in Wikimedia Commons has a Talk page. You can get there using the “discussion” link at the top of every page.": You may also wish to e-mail us at info-commons@wikimedia.org. Thoughts? Rjd0060 (talk) 01:37, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
- This is definitely a good idea, but would it be possible to do an interview with OTRS people and maybe publish a survey about requests that have been made in the past? Because I really would not know what "normal feedback" means otherwise. Jane023 (talk) 11:58, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
Translation fix[edit]
{{Editprotected}} Hi, only the first part of "To file a formal DMCA/OCILLA request, send it to the Wikimedia Foundation's designated agent." is available for translation. Can someone fix this? // WikiPhoenix [Talk] 20:04, 30 January 2014 (UTC)
- I removed the "tvar"s in that section of Commons:Contact_us/Problems. A translation administrator will have to mark it for translation. Mono might be able to do that? whym (talk) 00:07, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
- Done —Mono 00:52, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
Translation (2)[edit]
Hi,
Very nice revamp.
Something though: for each of the subpages, /Problems, /People etc., we are supposed to translate again the left panel strings. Even though translation memory helps, this is a bit cumbersome. Could these strings be move in a sub template which would be translated only once?
Thanks, Jean-Fred (talk) 23:46, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
- Hmmmm, looks like this was the all point of Commons:Contact us/tabs ; but it seems this template call makes use of unecessary translated strings... Am I correct? Jean-Fred (talk) 23:48, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
- Commons:Contact us/tabs has been converted into translatable page. --Kaganer (talk) 17:15, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

I am reposting this as it has seemed to slip by without comment. As above I think this is more instructive and logical. Saffron Blaze (talk) 22:03, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
- Personally, I like the current text better. I'm sorry, but your version is much too wordy, contains multiple run-on sentences and uses cryptic all-caps shortcut links that are meaningless to the target audience instead of integrating the links into the text. —LX (talk, contribs) 22:53, 11 February 2014 (UTC)
Copy right on stamps[edit]
