CDC Description: In this photograph, a camel relaxes near a village in the state of Gujarat, India.

Epidemic Intelligence Service officers from the CDC visited India in 1964 because of a smallpox outbreak on the subcontinent. Largely through the effort of the CDC and partners such as India, smallpox was eradicated in 1977.
