Summary[edit]
Description1968 8 Nigeria CDC.png |
English: This 1968 photograph taken during the Nigerian-Biafran civil war, showed individuals assessing the height and weight measurements of Biafran refugees, in order to quantitatively determine the amount of food supplementation per refugee was to be distributed based on each person’s level of malnutrition.
During the Nigerian-Biafran civil war, the CDC assisted in delivering food to the refugees. However, due to a lack of international help, health officials could not get enough food to everyone, so they relied on a high protein distribution effort that was supplemented with locally-grown carbohydrates such as yams, and cassava (manioc) melons. Dr. Lyle Conrad and Dr. William H. Foege established a standard for height and weight for the Nigerian children, which before that time did not exist. |
