Request for vectorization - the Coat of Arms of Moravia[edit]

The moravian eagle, oldest preserved color representation of the coat of arms of the Moravian margrave

Article(s): Moravia, Coat of arms of Moravia.

Request
I'm looking for a person willing to vectorize an image file with the Moravian coat of arms, which is used by many sites: Znak Moravy.jpg. The bitmap format is an obstacle to its wider use on the grounds that the SVG format is better (technically). The existing Moravia.svg file used by other articles as SVG is not suitable from the aesthetic point of view (the shape of the Moravian eagle's tail is not adapted to the shield). It is possible that more people would be willing and able to do it, but in the end at least one willing person could answer the call and do the vectorization.--Pavel Fric (talk) 18:18, 1 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Graphist opinion(s)
@Pavel Fric: do you have an "official" link to the correct version? Looking at this web page, it appears that the existing SVG is more correct. -- (talk) 13:30, 16 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@: See National symbols of the Czech Republic. 1) The linked picture above represents the combination of the Moravian eagle as depicted in the file (picture) with the state (Czech republic) coat of arms. It is copied from it (cut and pasted into an inappropriate shield shape without being adapted). 2) This is based on the annex to the Law on State Symbols, where the coat of arms is described as "Quarterly, first and fourth gules a lion rampant double-queued argent crowned, armed and langued or (for Bohemia), second quarter azure an eagle displayed chequy gules and argent crowned, armed and langued or (for Moravia), third quarter or, an eagle displayed sable crowned of the first, armed and langued gules, on its breast a crescent trefoiled and a crosslet argent (for Silesia)." It is noticeable that in the appendix (picture) to the law the shape of the tail is adapted to the shape of the 2. field (approximately rectangle) in the shield (French shield), whereas in the picture on the linked page the tail of the eagle is not adapted to the shape of the shield (gothic shield). In the English translation, the "red" colour of the dice is listed before the silver, but in the original of the law (Czech language) the silver comes first in the description, followed by the red: the check (chessboard) is silver-red, in this order. Never mind that the appendix to the law shows the check(ering) red-silver. Finally, this can also be seen in other depictions of the Moravian eagle's form or its descriptions (however, the oldest colour depiction from the 13th century is silver-red). But the point is to have depictions that match the text of the law, because images further shape people's ideas of what something should look like.--Pavel Fric (talk) 12:27, 12 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yes, I encourage them too. It will be very useful. At the end of November 2022, the user Tschechische Länder took the image (file Znak Moravy.jpg), ran it through an graphic editor, enlarged it several times, renamed it to Coat of arms of Moravia.png, and replaced the original file in the Czech version of the article (Moravská orlice; English version: Coat of arms of Moravia) with the file with a strangely blurred top edge of the shield, saved in PNG format. I would really like to see an SVG file in that place.--Pavel Fric (talk) 13:43, 10 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Ukrainian general staff brigade insignia[edit]

Article(s): 101st Brigade for the Protection of the General Staff

Request
Please make a new SVG file for the insignia of the Ukrainian 101st Brigade for the Protection of the General Staff based on the design of the sleeve insignia and the modern cap badge.
The present file leaves much to be desired and is not representative of what the insignia actually looks like, in contrast to most of our comparable files for other brigades. Images of the present-day sleeve insignia in use can be seen here in full colour and low-visibility variants. (Close-up of the patch here; of the real cap-badge here.) A simplified greyscale design appears on their Facebook here. The existing coat of arms image also lacks the brickwork background. GPinkerton (talk) 18:01, 2 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@GPinkerton: here you go. (talk) 08:11, 25 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@GPinkerton: Actually, when I look at this flag image, the correct insignia should not include any brick pattern? -- (talk) 17:43, 25 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@: Hi, that looks great! I think a flag from 2014 shouldn't override what we see in the sleeve patches themselves, especially as Ukrainian military heraldry has been revolutionized over the course of the Russo-Ukrainian War. What I was hoping to see was a more simplistic design which would be basically two-dimensional like the sleeve patch shield. Something like File:81 ОАеМБр к.svg or File:1 ОТБр.svg by Inkscape'r. The helmet looks much better now, but I'd like to see a simple shield with flatter rendering of the poleaxes and gauntlet which you have done a great job in vectorizing. Graphist opinion(s)
  1. 1 Ok
  2. 2 Red and green are OK, but the lion would get from me #e1ed03, it would be best to recreate the original contours, but if it is impossible, this drawing can be left, only with the added tongue and tail closer to the body. Swiãtopôłk (talk) 22:31, 11 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Swiãtopôłk:
For #2 at that time the company was anglo-iranian. So, I take elements and colors from Flag of England.svg and Safavid Flag.svg. Orange color is the one for lion on flag for Safavid and Pahlavi dynasties (green and orange colors was taken from the Safavid flag, the lion design was also adapted from this same flag). If you look at the logo Bp logo1961.png, given for (1968-1984), the color is orange... Moreover, your proposed color, #e1ed03, is a

greenish yellow
not really appropriate. To be continued...
#4: This flag seems not to exist. The only pictures I found are only the given logo (i.e. this logo on a white background).
#5: I don't know if this flag exists or not. I've only found this logo on a same green background (often a square design), but no real flag.
If not existing, deletion will be requested for these two last flags. Please, provide a source.
En rouge (talk) 19:19, 12 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@En rouge: I chose this non-standard color because it is present in all images (I think it's because the green underneath shows through) also the dressing of the lion seems to be cohesive [2] [3], This [4] is a link to the official PDF describing the history of the flag, it was one of my sources when I wrote the note, but I haven't opened it in a long time and since Sunday my internet is slower and the PDF won't load. There is #2 but clearly longer than in the photo of the physical flag and I think it's a graphic mistake. If you see any other differences in the PDF compared to what I've provided before, then suggest PDF, it's possible that I rushed the approvals #1. Swiãtopôłk (talk) 21:51, 13 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Swiãtopôłk: I'll talk here about yellow color, in #2 only (but other important info still to go, about #xx later...)
You wrote that your non-standard color is present in all images, but you only link to one image (image zoomed from another, the latter full flag image more appropriate as much in context):
From you link [5] (and [6] which is part of it), you can see that zoomed lion is not the same color as in the entire flag picture. In the full image, the lion is more orang-ish (and even in the zoomed image the green is out of reality, regarding full scope image).
Here are some links to flags I found:
  • [7] first flag on top: almost yellow/orang-ish lion, but others mostly orange or brown
  • [8] (brown)
  • [9] (brown)
  • and, on Commons, Flag of Persia (1964, with fringe).jpg, Qajar Naval Ensign.svg, War Flag of Fath Ali Shah.svg,
And ere are two flags, but fake flying flags I suppose, supposedly based on flags from Commons:
I still maintain, as an argument, that in Bp logo1961.png, color yellow in fact is... orange
(and in your sample pdf file, red seems to be inappropriate for #1; this can induce suspicion about color fidelity).
Yours, En rouge (talk) 02:32, 14 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
PS: why don't you provide all the material you have, for the graphists to have more information?
From one video I found in BP web site, for #2 I'll modify orange to a yellow one. To be continued.

BSicon RACK.svg[edit]

Template:Railway line legend recommends using BSicon FUNI for both w:funiculars (the ones with a " funiculus" or cable as appearing on the left side of the icon) and simple w:rack railways (which are sometimes confused with funiculars, but don't use a cable).
For clarity, it could be helpful to have a separate icon "RACK" for the later, similar to the above, but without the cable. Also, I'd make it raise to the right side (as the aerial one), as it's generally placed on the right side of stations. --Enhancing999 (talk) 09:06, 11 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Graphist opinion(s)
Pictogram voting comment.svg Comment @Snow Lion Fenian: I think these are not the flags of the cathedral as such, but banners of arms of the bishops themselves. Presumably, they fly to indicate the prelate is there. The cathedral (or its corporation or chapter or whatever) ought to fly the diocesan flag intended for all churches in that bishop's territory: the English cross with the episcopal arms inescutcheoned in the canton. Since copies of the diocesan flags exist already, it might be better to request a full complement of episcopal banners of arms, rather than focusing on individual cathedral churches. GPinkerton (talk) 19:53, 2 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@GPinkerton: Well, I'm not sure these are supposed to be episcopal banners of arms, considering that neither of the arms/flags in the links match the look of the actual COAs of the Diocese of Peterborough and the Diocese of Southwark. Or am I interpreting your response wrongly? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 22:20, 2 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Snow Lion Fenian: I didn't make clear the difference between the arms of the diocese and the arms of the incumbent bishop (or of some significant predecessor). Could the arms in the flag belong to the bishop personally rather than to the see? How are we identifying the flags with the cathedrals as such? GPinkerton (talk) 22:46, 2 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@GPinkerton: Well, regarding Southwark Cathedral, this post here (from the Cathedral's FB page) does confirm the arms in the previous link as those of Southwark Cathedral itself. Though I'll try and get back to you regarding Peterborough Cathedral at some point. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 02:36, 3 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Pictogram-voting question.svg Question this flag looks like an old banner of arms, but this article suggests the flag was designed by Graham Bartram (@GrahamPadruig: ). Is there any more information available? GPinkerton (talk) 21:11, 2 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@GPinkerton: Well, from what I've gathered, the cross-impaling-the-dragon's-head is indeed part of the arms attributed to Saint Margaret of Antioch (if you go on this page here, and scroll down to the "Arms Associated With Saints" section, and then on to the part about "St Margaret of Antioch", you'll see what I mean), but not the crowned portcullis. Which leads me to believe that it was indeed Graham Bartram who designed the modern flag of the COSM, and that it was his decision to add the crowned portcullis onto what is otherwise (as you said) a banner of arms. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 02:19, 3 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Snow Lion Fenian: That is very helpful. I suppose the first step would be a vectorization of the dragon's head arms of St Margaret, after which it will be easy to make up the flag and possibly the various Norfolk arms associated with it. GPinkerton (talk) 17:25, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Request for a map showing the Dublin quays and corresponding quay names[edit]

Article(s): en:Dublin quays

Request

Hi all, happy 2023. I'm looking for someone's assistance in making a map/illustration of the quays of Dublin city, Ireland to show the location of each quay along the river Liffey. At present the article Dublin quays doesn't really give any pictorial explanation of which quay is where, even though this would be the best way to present the information. There are 25 separate "quays" (see list below taken from the page en:Dublin quays). N.B. two of the quays do not have the 'quay' designation at the end of their name ( "Bachelors Walk" and "Usher's Island") but they are quays.

  • The name designations of the north roadway are (from west to east): Wolfe Tone Quay, Sarsfield Quay, Ellis Quay, Arran Quay, Inns Quay, Upper Ormond Quay, Lower Ormond Quay, Bachelors Walk, Eden Quay, Custom House Quay and North Wall Quay.
  • The name designations of the south roadway are (from west to east): Victoria Quay, Usher's Island, Usher's Quay, Merchant's Quay, Wood Quay, Essex Quay, Wellington Quay, Crampton Quay, Aston Quay, Burgh Quay, George's Quay, City Quay, Sir John Rogerson's Quay and Britain Quay.

Request to add 2' 3" to File:Track gauge.svg[edit]

Request
Could an SVG expert add 2ft 3in (686mm) to this file, with a colour somewhere between the colours used for 600mm and 762mm please? I want to expand the lead for the list of 2 ft 3 in railways on En-wiki, and a comparison of other gauges would be helpful. Pinging @DePiep, Antonsusi, and Quibik, who have all edited this image in the past. Thanks. Voice of Clam 15:26, 3 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Graphist opinion(s)
Understandable by itself, but please note that en:Track gauge#List of defined track gauges has 252 defined gauges! To have this gauge added (to a graph of ~10) would require, IMO, that the gauge is highly relevant. For example, by great number of articles (railways applicating), or by its history. DePiep (talk) 15:35, 3 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@DePiep: perhaps an alternative would be to create a new image, comparing 2' 3" with other common British gauges, e.g. 1' 11.5" (Ffestiniog etc.), 2' 6" (Welshpool & Llanfair) and 4' 8.5" (standard gauge). Voice of Clam 18:02, 3 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I don't know how "British" gauges are defined, but in the full list, "narrow" has 92 rows (< standard gauge), and if we cut out metric-defined gauges, still dozens remain. Unfortunately we have no overview of the usage-numbers anymore (article count for given gauge 'x.y inches'). Also, I doubt the tough usefullness of the drawing involved, compared to the hard numeric gauge e.g., in a list (in which you can choopse your own entries, British and/or other). Also, some gauges may be merged as being "practicaly the same, by half inches" (enwiki task todo). Maybe this drawing is a nice illustration at best, for this (but ideally in a narrow/standard/broad describing article, if you see what I mean). All in all, the number of gauges is huge, is my concern. DePiep (talk) 18:15, 3 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm not sure if you've understood the reason for my request. I'm not asking for another arbitary gauge to be added to the file for no reason - I want a comparison between 2' 3" and other gauges specifically for the specific article I stated above. On reflection I think a new file would be better, and I've suggested the most common gauges, greater that miniature railways, used in the UK (which is where all 2' 3" railways are based AFAIK). Help unbaking text in SVG files[edit]

For the first two: Vantaa já Kerava pyereestvaijeemkuávlu, Viestâr-Uusimaa pyereestvaijeemkuávlu, Koskâ-Uusimaa pyereestvaijeemkuávlu, and Nuorttâ-Uusimaa pyereestvaijeemkuávlu. For the third: Suomâ and the 19 articles about the regions on the same Wikipedia.

Request
I would like to be able to translate the labels in these SVG files into Inari Sámi so we can use them on the Inari Sámi wp, but this is not possible because the text is baked into the files. In addition, the text will be translated into two other Sámi languages for use on Wikimedia projects. On a more global basis, this would also be useful for other contributors who would like to use these in their own language on their own Wikipedia. This would require the text labels in these files to be unbaked first though. Takkâ! :) --Yupik (talk) 09:00, 11 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I converted the first file (it had aria-label attributes). It should be suitable for SVG Translate now.

I do not have time for the other two. Glrx (talk) 09:02, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thank you so much! It will be so neat to have these in the same language as the articles are written in! -Yupik (talk) 17:15, 13 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Arms of the Diocese of Lichfield[edit]

Article(s): Any articles these already appear on.

Could someone please modify the above files representing the Arms of the Diocese of Lichfield, so that they match the actual official version of the Arms recorded by the British College of Arms, as seen here and at the bottom right of this photo here (the difference being that the right half of the large cross should be gold, as should the two smaller crosses on the right side). Thanks. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 00:53, 13 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Mrmw: Nicely done, thank you! And while we're still here, is there any chance you could also modify the following file representing the Flag of the Diocese of Lichfield so that the Arms in the canton match the actual official Arms as well? @Mrmw: That's great, thanks! Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 17:26, 13 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Mrmw and Snow Lion Fenian: I don't think the file should be over-written in this way. This heraldrywiki page suggests that the all-red arms have a well-attested connection with the bishopric and have been used for centuries. Ditto this, which page Snow Lion Fenian cited in relation to the flag of St Margaret's, Westminster. It would seem (from the heraldrywiki page) that other variants have also appeared with more or less gold. I would say this calls for the creation of separate files, with each different arms on its own file. GPinkerton (talk) 17:45, 13 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@GPinkerton: and @Mrmw: Thanks for bringing that up, and sorry. With that having been said, perhaps the current files should remain looking like the officially recorded version, with separate files created for "Version 2" and "Version 3" from the Heraldry Wiki? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 17:57, 13 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Snow Lion Fenian: Based on a cursory look at search results I would say that the all-red version is the one most commonly attested historically in stained glass, funeral hatchments of the bishops, etc. (See: Category:Coats of arms of See of Lichfield and The Heraldry Society image library, which has 7 episcopal funeral hachments only one of which shows the gold variant). The heraldrywiki page (are there better sources?) says "the arms are more generally seen as counterchanged, i.e. only red and silver" and "The counterchanged arms already appear on a contemporary painting of Bishop Robert Wright (1632-1643), ... and are generally used since". How accurate this is I don't know, but I think separate files should be created for the gold ones and the existing files should revert back to the all-red, per COM:CROP.
Could it be that a grant of arms attempted to differentiate the ancient arms of St Chad from the modern bishops? Or from the cathedral chapter? GPinkerton (talk) 20:20, 13 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@GPinkerton: Honestly, I really wouldn't know. I haven't been able to find any information on the Lichfield diocesan Arms outside of the already mentioned websites. But I'll trust your judgement on it, since you clearly have a better grasp on this subject than I do, and more knowledge of WC guidelines as well. Thanks for your input. Say, now that User:Mrmw has very helpfully reverted the original Files, and created a second set of Files for the official Arms... is there any chance you'd be able to create the Files for the third version of the Arms? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 00:16, 14 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Mrmw and GPinkerton: So that's that all sorted. Many thanks to both of you for your help, in creating the files and providing input respectively. Always greatly appreciated. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 12:35, 14 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Togo, its regions and neighbouring countries[edit]

Article(s): Togo kuávluh and Togo at least. Later on, for the same topics in the Northern Sámi wp and in the Skolt Sámi wp project in the incubator.

I cannot figure out what is going on with this file. I can select and change the text from German to Inari Sámi, but when I change it, nothing shows up when the file is viewed on a browser. I need to be able to save the file as a separate Inari Sámi-language file (smn) since there is no browser that uses Inari Sámi and multilingual SVGs show up incorrectly. This file will also be translated into Northern and Skolt Sámi later on. Thank you for any and all help! --Yupik (talk) 19:22, 15 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The text could be made visible, and the path text could be removed.

The font specification should be font-family="DejaVu Sans" and font-weight="bold". When condensed is used, include font-stretch="condensed" and te transform x-scale should be 1 rather than 0.8. Glrx (talk) 20:32, 15 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I was wondering if one can provide these variants of the logo in Wikimedia Commons,

Also am guessing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:WebKit_logo_(2015).svg can be moved to Wikimedia Commons given it is WebKit's open source project logo. Thanks! −ebrahimtalk 03:01, 19 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
