Possible FPCs

Experimenting with a permanent section on my talk page. I've opened sections at COM:CRIT in the past, but I'm uncomfortable posting there too often and/or taking up a lot of space there. So here are images I'm considering (as is or after edit) for featured picture candidates. I plan to add/remove from this section semi-regularly. If you think one is a particularly good or bad idea, or if you have thoughts about potential edits, please let me know below!

I really like the cemetery with the cherry blossoms but I don't know if the FP crowd will think it has enough 'wow'. I think it's probably a 50-50 thing but I might nominate it and see how it does. I think the ones that are likeliest are to pass FPC are these three bird pics and I'd vote for any of them, but the best for me is the kestrel because it's so colourful. I do like the cemetery shot -- it's been in my "potential" [FP/QI/VI] category and in this section for a long time. My concern is less about "wow" than about wanting bit more sharpness? I almost nominated the hummingbird before, but something about the image seemed lacking. It was an unusual gray sky that day, which I really liked while I was there but didn't turn out as well in the photo. Still, it seems a bit better than other images we have of that species. The goose is clear, gives a good view of its natural sneer, and was out of its natural habitat in Harlem Meer.</rhyme> I just expect some "distracting background" or "no wow" comments. The kestrel may work, but I'd want to do another pass at editing to do some selective denoising. — Rhododendrites talk |  15:34, 23 January 2020 (UTC) The cemetery shot looks sharp enough to me, I wouldn't worry about that - it's less sharp at the corners than the centre but that's obviously normal, and the sharpness is good overall. One thing I would correct though, having a second look is that there is some blue CA on the branches at the top right. You may be right about the goose, but I think it probably stands a good chance anyway. You have my support if you choose to nominate any of these, anyway; I think I shall nominate the hummingbird myself if that's OK. I especially love the gulls, lining up like the three dock thugs they probably are. The light in the squirrel photo is great. Both these photos show animals that have adapted perfectly to human habitats, and the subtle urban backgrounds show this. The grackle colors against the dirt are simply beautiful. I know that some will complain about the ugly background, but as you say the contrast is part of why I like it. The squirrel ... I've wrestled whether to remove that one from the list for a little while. I love the light and color, but it is pretty small in the frame and the shot overall isn't as crisp as it could be. Trying to think about whether one of the killdeer chicks might work. First time I've seen them and they're just so stupid cute. The background mirroring its contours makes it look like it's center stage at some 1920s Broadway production. Just my 2 c. • Thanks, W.carter. Nominated. It looks like I may have come too close to its nest. "Too close" is relative, though -- mockingbirds can be quite aggressive in defending their nests/territories, divebombing passersby, etc. As for parades, I haven't quite gotten back into the habit of event photos since the pandemic started. I went out a few times for photos of George Floyd protests, but that's about it. Did you notice that the MET Museum website is using photos VERY like yours?

Hi - I was curious about one of your photos (File:Michael Kors dress and coat at the Met (52704).jpg as I thought it looked more like a Norman Norell design (tbh it is - and a pretty brazen knockoff, no less) so I was double checking it on the Met website, and saw that they have a photo up that looks *suspiciously* similar to yours! Link. I guess it is a compliment that your work is indistinguishable from the Met's own online images, but yeah, I did go back and forth quite a bit before I figured, "well, Rhododendrites's work is higher resolution, and the Met's picture shows more of the background, so it's just a hell of a coincidence."

Just wondered if you had noticed this, because I can imagine some people might try to claim you "stole" your photos from the Met website (and magically whacked up the resolution etc), especially as they look virtually identical! :) Mabalu (talk) 19:27, 3 September 2022 (UTC)

@Mabalu: Thanks for the heads up. With most of the Met's collections, I don't bother to photograph/upload because they're typically pretty good about sharing. But the special exhibitions are another story. :) In this case, to be fair, this exhibit had very narrow pathways and dividers between the displays, so there really aren't a lot of options for how to frame it. Brooklyn Public Library

Hello Rhododendrites,

I did not want to “kill” your nomination with my remark about the stitching error on your FP nomination of the Brooklyn Public Library photo. On the contrary, I wanted to make the discussion more objective by narrowing it from general comments like “the light is meh” to constructive comments like “there are some minor, certainly fixable problems”. And I actually wanted (and want) to support that photo – I just could not immediately add a support vote once that I had seen that stitching error, sorry. But I thought that was a fixable issue. I still think this is definitely an interesting building and the strong light actually works.

@Aristeas: Oh no worries at all. I think it was already more or less "dead". I know this kind of architecture isn't in the sweet spot for FPC, and the way things don't quite line up makes for a pretty tough starting point. I'm glad you pointed out the stitching error -- I looked around for them and missed that one. In this case, however, even if I took the time to fix it, the nom wasn't going anywhere. Question from the CPUG Board

Dear user group member,

I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.

With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.

That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.

However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:

Iguana

@PetarM: Thanks! I think this is an improvement, mostly. Two things, though:

First, is it compressed? It's much smaller than the original. I don't see a real difference at 100%, but I'd prefer to have uncompressed if possible.

Second, there is one point (I've marked it in a note on the file page), where to the right of that dark spot, the edits remove the light reflections from the tips of its spikes. It also removes some halos, but in removing the light I think it takes away some depth. If you wouldn't mind, perhaps you could undo the edits to the right of that spot and upload the uncompressed version? Very much appreciated. If not, I can just load them as separate layers and include part of the edits myself when I have time.
